How To Use A Clay Bar

Removing contaminants can be a bit of work, but to get your car looking the way it should is something worth doing – and a good investment.

It is the process of removing built up dirt, grime, bugs and tar from the paintwork, where washing alone is not up to the task.

Ensure the car is clean by giving it a thorough wash and dry. Make sure the surface is cool and, preferably, you’re parked in the shade.

REMOVE BUGS AND TAR

Where you couldn’t get bugs and tar off by washing, spray a small amount of bug and tar remover onto the affected area and work it in with a microfibre cloth.

WIPE RESIDUE OFF

Give the product at least 30 seconds to start dissolving the contaminants, and then remove the residue with a clean microfibre cloth.

APPLICATION OF CLAY BAR LUBRICANT

Divide each panel into sections of about one metre square then lubricate the first section. Apply the protectant liberally and massage it into the surface. Allow it to dry, then buff with a clean cloth.

RUB WITH CLAY BAR

Break the clay bar in half, knead it, flatten it out and rub one piece over the lubricated surface, until all contaminants are picked up. If the clay bar starts grabbing on the paint surface, apply additional lubricant.

FOLD, KNEAD AND FIND CLEAN CLAY BAR SURFACES AND CONTINUE WIPING

As the clay bar becomes dirty, fold and knead it to a clean portion.

WIPE DRY

Once the surface feels completely smooth, wipe dry with a super soft microfibre cloth.

REPEAT FOR EACH SECTION

Evaluate the finish and move on to the next section.

TIPS

  • Be aware that a clay bar won’t remove swirl marks, oxidation, stains or chemical etching – you’ll need some other specialist products for that.
  • Always replace the clay bar when it becomes too dirty or ineffective. If you drop the clay bar onto the ground, it must be replaced. Any dirt that attaches to it will cause severe damage to your paintwork.
  • Following a clay bar or bug and tar treatment, the paintwork must have a wax applied to ensure the finish is protected for a longer lasting shin
